Nobody likes a sunburn. People don't, horses don't...nobody enjoys that feeling of having baked yourself and the days or weeks of peeling skin and what is uncovered.

Nothing has ruined as many fun summer days as a sunburn, except maybe a heinous hangover (and the activities that led up to said hangover). So, the desire to have fun in the sun without getting burned is always at the top of summertime must-haves.

SUMMER CARE BUTTER is individually handcrafted right here in far northern Minnesota, using all natural good stuff: Shea Butter, Castor Oil, Olive Oil, Almond Oil, Coconut Oil, Beeswax, Avocado Oil, Cocoa Seed Butter, Zinc Oxide, Red Raspberry Seed Oil, Carrot Seed Oil, Argan Oil, Neem Oil, a Dash of Essential Oils and Love.

Each of the ingredients we use has some degree of natural sunprotection - shea butter, Almond Oil, Coconut oil, Cocoa Seed Butter, plus the addition of Carrot Seed Oil, Red Raspberry Seed Oil and Zinc Oxide for even more natural sun care.

The dilemma in creating a natural sunburn preventative is there is one, yes, ONE ingredient that offers any true sun protection that is considered natural. Good old zinc oxide.

Zinc oxide is a powdered form mineral that adds a layer of protection to your horse’s skin. Zinc Oxide has been used for decades (or longer) in human sunscreens and infant diaper protection creams. We feel it is the safest and most effective sunscreen active ingredient available. Zinc Oxide is the only active ingredient we use in any of our products. Together these hard-working ingredients amplify the sun shade properties of each other.

When using natural and organic ingredients for sun care purposes many variables are involved in how each individual ingredient works, including absorption rate, application methods and frequency. That is why we don’t use human calibrated SPF numbers, as they don’t correlate to your horse’s needs.

Remember, the secret to safe summer fun is to reapply the sun product frequently if your horse is in direct sun.

Apply as needed for summer sun exposure both before and after, paying special attention to the area around the eyes, ears, muzzle and any white areas that are prone to sun issues.

Please ensure your horse had adequate access to shade (and fresh water) at all times, but especially during the summer.
